Mihael Šuštaršič

Mihael Šuštaršič, Editor-in-Chief

Mihael Šuštaršič joined the Slovenian Press Agency (STA) in 2000 while still a university student. A graduate in international relations, he began his journalistic career on the foreign desk and was part of the EU presidency task force during Slovenia’s first presidency of the EU Council in 2008. Over the years, he became one of STA’s most experienced foreign affairs reporters, recognised for his work both within and beyond the agency. His areas of specialisation include international security and international law, and he is also regarded as a knowledgeable analyst of relations between Slovenia and Croatia.

In 2021, he was appointed head of the foreign desk. A year later, he accepted an invitation to become editor-in-chief of Siol.net, Slovenia’s second-largest online news portal by reach. He led the outlet until mid-2025, significantly strengthening its audience reach and editorial impact. He was subsequently selected through a public call to serve as editor-in-chief of the STA, with a mandate focused on enhancing the agency’s operational robustness.

Šuštaršič is known as a determined advocate of journalistic professionalism and societal responsibility of the media. He has been repeatedly elected as a representative of journalists and broader agency staff. He served multiple terms as chair of the agency body representing STA journalists, became the first chair of the STA Works Council, and was a frequent spokesperson for the newsroom. He was also among the leading figures of the Za ObSTAnek campaign, which opposed the most severe political pressure in the agency’s history and was selflessly supported by numerous citizens with donations.
